H.T. Rapinski Here With the Caves of Steel by Isaac Asimov
Alright the Caves of Steel is the second book that I have had the privilege of reading in the Robot Series. Just imagine far in the future when Spacers have colonized fifty planets and the earth is bristling with over ten billion inhabitants. The Spacers are all powerful and have created an advanced society driven by logic. The Positronic Brain is used to run all robots and the Spacers have created the first android, a robot that looks and acts like a human. This is a science fiction mystery novel superbly written by Asimov. Earth's cities have conglomerated into huge City hubs where the New York City takes up half of the Eastern sea board of the United States. These Cities are completely covered from the outside world and only the most privileged can acquire sun rooms in order to get UV radiation. You follow detective Elijah Bailey as he investigates the murder of a leading Spacer who lived in Spacetown. As this is full of politics the commissioner places his best man on it. Bailey is joined by the android R. Daneel Olivaw, the R standing for robot. No normal person can tell that Olivaw is a robot but there are those Medievalists who yearn for the era before robotics and they have intelligence reports that he is a robot. Bailey and Olivaw have to go from high stakes questioning to chase scenes throughout the cities expressways as Asimov paints the picture of a future of riots where Cities can collapse to kill millions of people on the shortage of just one precious supply. Tensions rise as Bailey gets closer to the truth behind the murder and who did it as he races against the clock in the final hours of this thrilling investigation. This is a great read and I cannot wait to read the next book in the series. H.T. Rapinski signing off.
