Hey guys! I am finally doing a review! It has been what... 2, 3, 4 months? Which I apologize for greatly. But I am back and with a long list of books to review! But to start I will go in as much as an order as I can. Which means I will be reviewing TWO Laurie R. King books. If you remember my post on the
Beekeepers Apprentice these are the second and third books. The catch is that what I read as the second book is really just what happened in the middle of the first book. I was lead to this decision by amazon and a super helpful post on what order the books should go in and not what order they were released in. Before you all start yelling at me to finally do a review, I guess I should finally do some of my reviews.
O Jerusalem by Laurie R. King
Our story opens (after tons of translation pages for words you run into later, and three different prologues in my copy of the book.) with Sherlock Holmes and Mary Russell "sneaking" into Palestine. While in Palestine they go sight seeing, crime solving, and you learn lots of (for me useless) information on the culture at that time. ( think that I counted at lest 3 pages at the least about tea when I counted up all the paragraphs. Almost more with coffee!) eventually there is a murder, they meet the bad guy, and every thing goes down in the last..
twenty pages?!?!?!?!?!
I rate this a 3/5 stars. OK the idea was there and effort was put into it. I can't say I hated it but I can't say I love it either. For me It was the three pages worth of tea explanations and coffee explanations. I don't need to know about the longest way to make tea, it may taste good but it is painful to try and read through. I also was a bit annoyed that the author waited till the last couple pages to bring in anything worth while action. For me this book was a waste of two weeks. It took me that long because I couldn't find the interest and because I couldn't find a map to match the book until I asked my grandma. Hint, maps really help because they bounce around ALOT.
A Monstrous Regiment of Women by Laurie R. King
Our story begins with our main character Mary Russell writing a huge, very important, (and not to ruin the book, but never finished) paper. This whole book is set around a (you could say) "religious" group that her friend Veronica has gotten into. Margery Childe runs the New Temple of God and takes in Russell. Eventually people who are very important start dying and Mary's friend is the next target. And can Mary solve the mystery in time or will she become a target too?
I rate this book a 4/5 stars. I thought it was written well and it was fairly entertaining. The reason it isn't a 5/5 is because I thought it could have gone a bit faster and had a bit more action. Other than that it was a good book and I would love to read the next book... IF ONLY SOME ONE WOULD FINALLY RETURN IT TO THE LIBRARY! Ya.... having problems with people and not returning things I want to read.
So guys I hope you enjoyed this. Spent four days writing this because of poor time management. I also have been really caught up in home work. (I should be doing my French but shhhhhhhhhhhh........ this was way better than that any way.) I must get going so I can finish my homework. I hope you guys enjoyed these reviews and I hope to be able to post more often but well that will be left up to fate.... and my teachers. Talk To You All Later! -Kaitlynn
